U.S. Puts new sanctions on energy networks helping Syria

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The U.S. Department of Treasury said late Monday, it placed sanctions on international networks allegedly providing energy products to the Syrian regime of Bashar al Assad.

The Treasury said in a statement it imposed sanctions on seven entities and four individuals, and named seven vessels as blocked property.

"Many of those targeted are front companies the Syrian government has used to evade U.S. and European Union sanctions", it added.

In addition, the Treasury identified six Syrian government entities and three vessels in which the government has an interest.

Monday's action freezes any assets the entities have in U.S. jurisdiction and prohibits Americans from doing business with them.

"Treasury will continue to employ its robust financial tools to weaken Assad's support network," said Adam Szubin, acting under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, in the statement.
