MPs Urge Kuwaitis To Rally Behind Leadership

(MENAFN- Arab Times) As Kuwait commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion, the lawmakers urged the citizens to rally behind their legitimate leadership and to draw lessons from this bitter incident in light of the new challenges that Kuwait and the entire region are currently facing.
MP Khalil Saleh asserted that despite the painful and bitter memories evoked by the Iraqi invasion, the heroic stance taken by the people of Kuwait at the time should not be forgotten as it represents a bright spot in the history of the country and it will continue to inspire generations. He stressed the country is in dire need of such inspiration due to the emergence of a different form of invasion which aims to undermine national unity and divide the people of one nation.

He added the unique Kuwaiti school of thought, which faced the brutal invasion through the unity and cohesion of its people who rallied behind the legitimate leadership, will remain defiant to those who try to spread evil on Earth under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. He pointed out the global solidarity in addressing the issue concerning Kuwait did not come out of the blue as Kuwaitis exercised their right to national unity through actions and words-thereby, gaining everyone's respect and support.

MP Humoud Al-Hamadan stressed that the commemoration of the Iraqi invasion after 25 years comes with lessons which should be pondered on; so the leadership, the government and the people can fully benefit from these lessons. He said first and foremost among these lessons is the need for all Kuwaitis, regardless of their factions, to support the legitimate leadership rather than cooperate with others.

He highlighted another lesson from this incident - zero tolerance for conditions and problems surrounding the country. "No matter how small the problem is, everyone should be alert as the volatile situation requires the entire nation to think of the worst possibilities. If we tolerate such a situation, we might lose our precious land," he concluded.

MP Dr Mansour Zafiri said the second of August each year is not just a memory that passes through the minds of people in this country. He emphasized the need to learn from the painful incident and be inspired by the courageous national stance of citizens then. "While commemorating the anniversary of the invasion, we must remember all the righteous martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the homeland so that Kuwait remains a proud country. We must also remember and be grateful for the positions taken by the international community, as well as those who contributed to the restoration of our home," he added.

He went on to say, "Kuwait and its people are facing great challenges in the political and economic fields. We have to join hands in building our home while refraining from serving personal interests and psychological tendencies that impede our steps towards the realization of our ambitions."

MP Abdullah Al-Abdani asserted the people of Kuwait have proven to the world that national unity was a strong and effective response to the brutal Iraqi aggression in 1990. "As we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion, we recall with all respect and deep appreciation the sacrifices made by Kuwaitis of different orientations and affiliations. Some of them even sacrificed their lives; thereby, gaining the support and sympathy of the international community."

MP Abdullah Al-Tamimi called on Kuwaitis from all classes and categories to be inspired by the lessons drawn from the invasion. "We commemorate the 25th anniversary of Saddam's barbaric invasion of our beloved country. Even if a quarter century had passed since the 'Black Day', the long period did not remove the painful memories from our minds and our hearts. Yet, we have to understand lessons from the incident," he added.

MP Mohammed Al-Huwaila stated the Iraqi invasion is a painful memory that every Kuwaiti carries, since it was considered an act of betrayal between brothers. He pointed out the people of Kuwait will never forget the date Aug 2, 1990. Although, remembering the day and the seven months of occupation brings back painful emotions, it was also the day when the whole nation witnessed the glorious sacrifice of Kuwait's martyrs and the unprecedented level of unity among the people, he asserted.

In another development, MP Majed Al-Mousa said the Parliament has had reservations on the performance of ministers; hence, the need for the premier to evaluate them. He underscored the importance of taking this step as some MPs are anxious and others have opted to submit interpellation motions on matters that demand comprehensive answers from the government's side. He added that evaluating the performance of ministers will deter MPs from submitting interpellation motions and ensure continuity of cooperation between the two authorities.

Meanwhile, MP Abdullah Al-Turaiji submitted a number of queries to Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled on the issuance of executive passports to Kuwaiti employees assigned at the League of Arab States.

This came after the lawmaker obtained information that these employees' application for the executive ('green') passports were rejected even if they have the right to do so as per Article Three of the Passport Law.

He wants to know the total number of employees assigned in the league, reasons for rejecting 'green' passport applications and number of new employees given such passports.
