Iraq Defense Min. says Baghdad defensive line for Mideast security

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Iraqi Minister of Defense Khalid Al-Obeidi said here on Thursday his country is the key defensive line for the security of the Middle East region.

During a meeting with his visiting US counterpart Ashton Carter, Al-Obeidi said: "Iraq is the first defensive line for Middle East security, and its fight against terrorist forces eventually leads to the protection of the civilized world's interests." On security reform efforts in Iraq, the minister said the plan of reforming and rebuilding military and security agencies in Iraq was going on as planned.

But, Al-Obeidi called on the international community to contribute to the reconstruction of freed territories in his country.

US Secretary of State Ashton Carter arrived in Baghdad earlier on Thursday on an unannounced visit for talks with senior Iraqi officials and American military chiefs serving in Iraq.

Carter is on a regional tour that includes Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Israel. (Pick up previous) mhg.mt
