Nearly 25,000 foreign fighters in Iraq, Syria - Eurojust

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Chair of Counter-Terrorism Team of the EU body for judicial cooperation (Eurojust) Michele Coninsx on Monday said it is very difficult to estimate the number of foreign fighters from Europe who have gone to fight in Iraq and Syria.

"It is very difficult for anybody in the EU to give clear figures on those who went to the zones of conflict and those who stayed there or those who died there. "In 2012 we heard about 600 to 700 and in 2013 a few thousands. On the global level about 25,000 persons, but I don't know if those figures could be checked or cross checked," Coninsx told a press conference here.

She noted that in 2013 hundreds of youngsters were leaving Europe to go to Iraq and Syria and some of them were coming back with terrorist intentions. "There is a need for common approach to a common problem by preventing radicalisation in schools, families and mosques" she said.

Michele Coninsx, who is a Belgian, said the massive use of internet and social media by terrorist groups is a "matter of great concern." She added that cybercrime prosecutors of the EU held a meeting recently to share concerns linked with terrorism and cybercrime.
