Hamdan bin Zayed: UAE plays a central role in addressing the consequences of humanitarian disasters and crises


(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The UAE, under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, plays a plays a central role in addressing the consequences of humanitarian disasters and crises, said H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and President of Emirates Red Crescent.

In a statement on the occasion of Zayed Humanitarian Work Day, which coincides with the nineteenth day of the Holy Month of Ramadan, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan said, "The initiatives of the UAE make a difference in enhancing humanitarian response to emergencies and crises and the efficiency of relief operations in hot spots."

He added, "The UAE is an important source of initiatives and home to values of exalting humanity and protecting people's right to decent living. The achievements made by the UAE in this field means we have bigger commitment to humanity and a central role to play in protecting and improving the quality of life of vulnerable people."

Sheikh Hamdan paid a rich tribute to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE, who passed away on 19th Ramadan of 2004. Many vital initiatives were launched from the UAE and improved the lives of millions of underprivileged and marginalised people, he said, noting that the late leader, who is credited with adopting noble humanitarian positions and launching innovative initiatives, is still a source of inspiration.

"The UAE continues to pursue the same path to promote its humanitarian mission and shoulder its responsibility in reducing the suffering of people. The UAE followed an outstanding approach and a unique style to enhance humanitarian and charity work and make a huge leap in improving the domain of relief and aid to transform it from mere emergency aid at times of crisis and disaster to development-oriented projects that contribute towards developing vulnerable societies."

He highlighted the UAE's efforts to combat poverty, hunger and malnutrition in the least-developed countries through generous food aid.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed also warned of worsening humanitarian crises in countries plagued with conflicts that block the flow of humanitarian and relief aid to affected people in besieged villages and towns.

He called upon the international community to shoulder its responsibility to provide protection to victims of conflicts.

Highlighting the efforts being made by Emirates Red Crescent, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan said Zayed Humanitarian Work Day in an opportunity for the agency to assess and boost its progress to effectively contribute to bolster partnerships with all segments of society and promote noble values and principles.

"In this context, we are working hard to capitalise on our capabilities and maximise our benefits from the advantages we have in order to strengthen our partnership with others, field coordination and teamwork," H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed added.
