From the UAE to the world: solar, so good: paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A UAE paper has said that aviation has something to be proud of as an aircraft has completed a major part of its flight around the world without using a single drop of fuel. When the Solar Impulse took off from Abu Dhabi on March 9th, it was on a debut scientific mission.

"But as it landed at Hawaii's Kalaeloa airport on July 3th, it had made history," said the Khaleej Times in an editorial on Sunday.

The solar-powered aircraft is flying around the world and has now completed the most difficult part of its journey. The flight, from Japan to Hawaii, was the eighth of 13 legs. This comes as a shot in the arm for inventions that look up to solar power.

This success will go a long way in furthering the debate on renewable energy resources, including sun and wind power, and how they could be used more economically. Bio-fuels and other conventional means of energy will definitely take a back seat, as scientists and world leaders will put their weight behind this pollution-free source of power. This flight proves the world can be powered by unlimited sunshine, provided the right infrastructure is made available. At a time when oil-rich economies are looking at renewable avenues of energy, the Solar Impulse flight has shown them where to put in their investments.

By completing this phase, Solar Impulse has brought to the fore the importance of clean technologies for sustainable development. This expedition was all about thinking and implementing renewable energy plans more effectively and will open new horizons for science.

"This is also a major leap in spreading awareness about the environment and preserving nature while meeting UN Millennium Developmental Goals," concluded the daily.
