Sri Lanka begins building USD180m Chinese-funded expressway

(MENAFN) Sri Lanka announced launching the construction work on a Chinese-funded expressway which links the southern towns of Matara and Hambantota, Xinhua reported.

The planned expressway, costing USD180 million, will be linked to the existing southern expressway, which connects Colombo and Matara via the southern Galle town.

Sri Lanka's President unveiled a plaque at the site where construction will begin in the presence of some government ministers and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka.

The southern expressway was to be extended to Hambantota. The new government later decided to continue with the extension plan of the southern expressway with Chinese funding.
