UNRWA appeals for more funds to meet needs of Palestine refugees

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said Sunday the financial assistance offered by donor countries are no longer sufficient for meeting the growing needs of the refugees.

The complicated operating conditions, including the disastrous violence, occupation, sieges and closure of crossings, led to bigger budget deficit for the Agency, according to a statement of the Agency carried by the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA).

The Agency appealed to the donor countries for offering more funding for its activities aiming to help some five million Palestinian refugees in the Middle East region.

It renewed commitment to continuing provision of essential services to the refugees until a fair and permanent solution to their cause is reached.

It refuted the recent press reports that some donor abstained from offering funding due to political considerations, saying that such reports are untrue and inaccurate.

Founded by a UN General Assembly resolution in 1948, UNRWA is tasked with providing assistance and protection to nearly five million Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Kuwait is one of the biggest donors for the Agency with donations amounting to USD 15 million this year. Kuwait contributions amounted to USD 14 million in 2014 and USD 23 million the previous year.
