Arab League warns of failure to reach settlement in Libya

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Arab League Tuesday warned that failure to help the Libyan parties to reach a political solution would "encourage international parties" to interfere in the Libyan affair, a matter rejected by the pan-Arab organization.

Deputy Secretary General Ahmad bin Hilli urged Arab countries to encourage the Libyan parties to be involved in dialogue, saying the Arab League was following up efforts exerted by Bernardino Leon, the UN Special Representative for Libya.

Speaking to reporters, bin Hilli said Leon's draft proposal for the Libyan parties included the formation of a government of national unity, holding an international conference co-sponsored by the UN and Arab League for the reconstruction of Libya.

He said there was an Arab and international interest in finding a solution for the Libyan crisis which would lead to the formation of a government of national unity.

Bin Hilli said objective of the rounds of dialogue, held in Arab and Western countries, was to help the Libyan parties reach a settlement in order to stop the violence and bloodshed.

The Libyan parliament meanwhile approved in principle Leon's proposed peace proposal.
