(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A 24-year old woman has been booked by Pathankot police for extortion on the complaint of a travel ticket examiner working with the Railways.
Pathankot Deputy Superintendent of Police Manoj Thakur said accused Anita Rani, a resident of Indora in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, allegedly extorted more than Rs 7 lakh from TTE Amarjit with whom she "met during a travel and both became friendly and exchanged phone numbers".
Thakur said Anita studied nursing at a private college in Amritsar and lodged complaints of harassment against Amarjit at Jalandhar and Amritsar and later retracted after "extorting" money from him.
"This time round too, she had consumed something that she pointed was poisonous. But, enquiries revealed that the substance she had consumed some days back was not poisonous. Police began the probe after Amarjit approached the police alleging extortion by the woman. A case under sections 388 (Extortion by threat of accusation of an offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life, etc.), 389 (Putting person in fear of accusation of offence, in order to commit extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) has been registered on the recommendation of District Attorney (Legal) against her," said the DSP.
DSP said Amarjit was married and had kids. The woman allegedly threatened to "reveal the relationship" to Amarjit's wife.
