Peaceful will key to solve Yemeni crisis - VP

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Yemeni Vice President Khaled Bahhah said Thursday any initiative for solving the conflict should be based on strong will for peace and cessation of the machine of war.

Speaking to reporters here on the latest developments of the situation in his country, Bahhah said everybody should shoulder their national responsibility for saving the country and engage in an equitable dialogue that could impact positively on the ground.

Bahhah, who doubles as prime minister, said that it is a top priority for his government to address the humanitarian aspects of the crisis and therefore a higher committee has been set up to arrange the relief effort.

He urged the military and police forces to side with legitimacy and reason, and help realize the aspirations of the people for peace and security.

He called on the Houthi rebels to abide by the UN Security Council resolution, adopted two days ago, halt all hostilities, and pull out their forces from Sana'a and all other cities.

"The door is open for all parties to engage in a comprehensive dialogue if they lay down their arms," the vice president stressed.

He affirmed that the current crisis will end soon thanks to the firm support of sisterly and friendly countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and beyond, voicing hope for creating the condition necessary for Yemen to join the GCC at an early date.

He extolled Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz and other Arab leaders for helping restore legitimacy in Yemen.

Commenting on the Russian abstention from voting for the UN Security Council resolution, he said: "The Russian stance was, nevertheless, positive since Russia did not use its veto power. This signaled an implicit agreement on the measure." Bahhah called on Iran to contribute positively to stability and security in the Gulf region, and use its influence on the Houthi rebels and force them to refrain from destabilizing Yemen and become an integral part of the Yemeni social texture.
