(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The Cameroonian parliament has said that the country's defense cooperation agreements signed with Turkey last year would be endorsed, paving the way for President Paul Biya to ratify the deals.
The agreements, signed in June of 2014, covers technical and training cooperation and facilitate Cameroon's purchase of Turkish-made small arm, the Cameroonian parliament said in a statement on Tuesday. Yet, it did not say when the deals would be endorsed.
For his part, Turkish ambassador to Cameroon Omer Faruk Dogan told The Anadolu Agency that his country "strongly supports" the security and stability of Cameroon.
"Moreover, bilateral security and defense relations are developing," he said. "We have a firm conviction that peace in the Central African region comes from the stability of Cameroon," the diplomat added.
The development comes as the Cameroonian army is involved alongside Chadian and Nigerian troops in a regional campaign against Boko Haram militant group.
Dogan welcomed Cameroon's role in the offensive, saying: "Turkey which had suffered from terrorism in the past cannot leave Cameroon alone in its fight against terror."
"The ratification of the defense agreements with Turkey will allow Cameroonian defense forces to receive training in Turkey and exchange information with their Turkish counterparts," he added.
