Amaravathi to be new Andhra Pradesh capital

The Andhra Pradesh cabinet today approved Amaravathi as the new capital of the state chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said today.

The cabinet also gave nod to the first phase of a master plan prepared by Singapore government agencies.

Amaravathi derives its name from Amareshwara Temple located in the historic village in Guntur district and is located on the banks of river Krishna.

Work on building the new capital will begin in June and is likely to have three rings: the core capital region capital area and a larger capital region.

Andhra Pradesh requires a new capital city after a new state of Telangana was carved out of the state last year. The two states will share Hyderabad as the joint capital for 10 years.
