(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Prime Minister, Abdullah Ensour, on Tuesday, held a series of meetings with heads of delegations and organizations taking part in a Syrian refugees donors conference in Kuwait.
Ensour met with Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon who hailed Jordan's pivotal and important role in the region and the world, especially in the fight against terrorism and for hosting of a large number of Syrian refugees.
The prime minister said appreciating Jordan's role in serving the Syrian refugees is important but not enough because the international community is required to shoulder its responsibilities and finance a response plan which the Kingdom devised to address the ramifications of the refugees crisis. He said Jordan continues to comply with international norms by keeping its borders open to those seeking refuge and shelter "but this issue had financial, social, economic and security cost that must be addressed."
Ensour also met with Administrator of the United Nations Development Program UNDP, Helen Clark, and discussed with her Jordan's efforts to bring about comprehensive development as well as challenges the Kingdom has been grappling with as a result of hosting a massive influx of Syrian refugees of more than 1.4 million.
Clark said the UNDP is ready to cooperate with Jordan and concerned bodies to boost their capabilities in addressing the refugees crisis. Meanwhile, UNDP Assistant Director and Arab Regional Bureau Director, Sima Bahouth, announced that the UNDP will launch its regional center in Jordan in Amman to coordinate assistance to the Syrian refugees.
