UN withdraws all international UN staff in Yemen

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The 13 remaining international staff of hundreds have been withdrawn from Yemen, Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary General Farhan Haq confirmed Tuesday.

At the daily briefing, Haq said that there are no more international staff in Yemen, as they are temporarily relocated outside the country.

"They are to go back as soon as circumstances permit," he added.

Haq then stressed that the work of the UN on the ground is done by local staff whom are several hundred, and the Special Adviser to the Secretary General on Yemen Jamal Benomar, along with a large number of staff are relocated outside of Sana'a over the weekend.

When asked about Benomar's location, the Deputy Spokesman said that "he is currently in Amman, yet continuing his efforts as it is difficult to continue the negotiations although it is crucial at this point".

Last week the GCC states of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar have announced a joint decision to "respond to the request" of the Yemeni President to protect his country from "Houthi aggression".

Nevertheless, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Ban reminded in a statement last week all parties involved of their obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians and of all humanitarian and United Nations and associated personnel, as well as of the rules and principles of international human rights law and refugee law.
