"Peru Power Report Q2 2015" Published

(MENAFNEditorial)

We maintain our bright outlook for Peru's power sector and we expect total power generation to grow by an average annual rate of 4.96% between 2015 and 2024. The energy-intensive mining sector a sound business environment and an expanding cons umer base will continue to drive economic growth in Peru - and by extension fast power consumption growth . The e xpansion in electricity generation will be provided primarily by hydropower and thermal (particularly natural gas-fired) capacity as the government's focus on renewables remains limited . D elays to project implementatio n remain the biggest threat to our upbeat growth forecast s for this market .

Our 10-year outlook for Peru's power sector is bright with total electricity generation to grow from 45.6 terawatt hour (TWh) in 2015 to 70.1TWh in 2024. Notwithstanding the headwinds that have affected the Peruvian economy of late our Country Risk team still expects Peru's real GDP to expand by an average annual rate of 4.5% through 2024. Faster economic activity will be driven by an expanding middle class and continued investment in the energy-intensive mining sector (the industry reportedly received total investment of USD 8.4bn in 2014). These factors will bring about strong growth in Peru's power needs and we forecasts that total electricity consumption will expand by an average annual rate of 5.37% over the next decade.
