Iraqi forces foil ISIL attack against Baiji oil refinery

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Iraqi army said Tuesday it foiled a fierce offensive by the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant's (ISIL) militants on an oil refinery in Baiji in Salahuddin governorate, north of Baghdad, a security source said.

ISIL gunmen launched an attack on Baiji refinery with four booby-trapped vehicles coupled with heavy gunfire, but the security forces protecting the facility foiled the offensive, the source from Salahuddin Operations Command told KUNA.

Anti-terrorism squads were exchanging fire with the ISIL militants, he added.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi interior ministry denied press reports that ISIL gunmen reached the outskirts of Baghdad and that there were clashes near Baghdad International Airport.
