Merkel Calls for Judicial Solution to Dispute over S China Sea


(MENAFN- QNA) German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged China to resort to the international courts to settle territorial disputes with its neighbours over the South China Sea.

This came a few days ahead of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) due to be held over the week end in the Italian city of Milan, Italy.

German News Agency (DPA) quoted Merkil as saying that border disputes can be settled at the International Court of Justice.

About 50 leaders, including Merkil, are expected to take part in the Asia-Europe Meeting which will open next Thursday.

For years, China has been in a maritime borders disputes over the South China Sea with such countries as the Philippines and Vietnams.

Among the leaders that will attend the Asian-European Summit are Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
