Oman taking measures for more focused welfare strategies for the elderly

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Social Development (MoSD) will be introducing a set of new, more focused measures to look into the needs of the sultanate's elderly population and their overall welfare.

The decision to formulate the new set of measures follows Oman's participation in a GCC summit in Kuwait which had discussed this aspect in great detailed and set a vision.

The conference talked about ways to raise the standard of living of senior citizens, utilise their services for the betterment of society and work out a mechanism to set aside social roles for them, a senior official from MoSD said.

As part of its new strategy, MoSD will look into health-related requirements of senior citizens, address change in their lifestyle due to technological developments around the world, particularly in Arab nations, identify their roles, functions, responsibilities and their relationship with society, family and social institutions, the official said.

It will evaluate values and social attitudes towards them. The aim is to make senior citizens self-reliant and to chalk out an action plan by studying field reports, she further noted.

Apart from these planned measures, the ministry is working towards improving bonds between parents and children. Recently, the director general of social welfare in MoSD had held a meeting aimed at addressing family problems.

At the meeting parents were counselled on ways to effectively deal with children and their problems.

The purpose was to help parents mould children in a manner that will contribute to social welfare as a whole, the ministry official said
