crocodile-skin bags designed by ethan koh come in hues of shocking pink elegant red turquoise blue and other bright shades inspired by the tropical colours of his native singapore.

“four generations of my family’s tannery have been making crocodile- skin bags. it is something i am truly passionate about” said ethan. “appreciating these bags are pretty much like appreciating diamonds. there are the four cs- colour cut clarity and carat. they get way more beautiful and expensive as the skin gets larger” he added. the singaporean designer now lives in london promoting his bag business.

the exotic hand-bag designer who was in dubai recently to showcase his collection to a select audience caught up with khaleej times for a quick chat about alligator-skin bags.

“these bags are exclusive pieces for a niche client base. my designer label makes only 800 of these beauties in a year and we sell them only to select customers who truly appreciate the value of the bags” he said. “more than 700 of my clientele are couture customers and it is almost like a private membership of select customers” he added.

koh’s bags are found in a few stand alone stores across the world. “you can find them in harrods uk; saks fifth avenue new york and several niche stores globally” he said. on some of the bags there are the animal motifs on the decorative clasps drawn from asian cultures: a frog for good luck and prosperity a hedgehog for freedom and snake for sensuality.

“women in dubai really like the collection especially because there is a lot they can relate to in terms of colours. if you look at my bags the colours have been inspired from an asian fruit market” said koh. “i do not design these bags for the average customer they are purely made for women who want more. these bags are like pieces of art” he added. “moreover fashion and art also comes with functionality. these bags are highly functional as well and i sometimes custom-make them to suit the needs of my clients” he added.

the designer graduated from central st martins uk a few years ago and decided to expand the family business into making niche market clutches and bags. “we follow a sustainable and ethical process while farming alligators for their skin. the best skin for bags come from the stomach of the animal and very little machine work goes into making them. we beat the leather and smoothen it out for the glossy coating and each bag has four different skin pieces. the best skins come from south africa and america” said koh. the designer said that each bag comes with an instruction manual on how to take care of them.

the smaller clutches and handbags are priced from dhs15 000 to dhs30 000 and the bigger bags begin at dhs30 000 and go up to dhs60-70 000. “i also sell bags with diamond work on them. they are priced at dhs200000 and above” added koh. dhanusha?khaleejtimes.com
