(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The US stressed here Wednesday that any Palestinian government must "unambiguously and explicitly commit to nonviolence, recognition of the state of Israel, and acceptance of previous agreements and obligations between the parties." State Department Spokesperson Jennifer Psaki told reporters that the timing of an announcement of a reconciliation deal between Fatah and Hamas was "troubling," adding "we were certainly disappointed in the announcement." She stressed "absent a clear commitment to those principles, this could seriously complicate our efforts; not just our efforts, but the efforts between the parties more importantly to extend the negotiations, as evidenced by the announcement by the Israelis to cancel the negotiating meeting this evening," saying "that's evidence of their view of the announcement by the Palestinians." She affirmed "we are watching closely," and that "we'll be watching what steps are taken, but this certainly is disappointing and raises concerns about our efforts to extend the negotiations." Psaki emphasized "it's hard to see how Israel can be expected to negotiate with a government that does not believe in its right to exist."
