Omani woman returns after Antarctic expedition

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Rumaitha al Busaidi, a presenter on Merge 104.8 has returned to the sultanate after her expedition to Antarctica. She was part of the International Antarctic Expedition (IAE) 2041 team which aims to spread awareness on environment.

The organisation acts as a platform for participants from different backgrounds and age groups to come together and share their experiences. This year 90 participants from 28 countries took part in the expedition.

For Rumaitha, the trip lasted for 20 days since she left Muscat, then to Doha, followed by Sao Paulo in Brazil, and finally to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. From Buenos Aires, she left for the Argentinean city of Ushuaia, which is considered to be the closest city to the Antarctic continent.

Her trip from Ushuaia to Antarctica involved a three-day voyage on the expedition's ship Sea Spirit .

According to Rumaitha, the ship faced many challenges and obstacles including storms during both legs of the journey. ''I also witnessed the effects of climate change like an iceberg breaking off from a glacier,'' she said. ''I saw several animals like leopard and Weddell seals, Gentoo penguins and Humpback whales during the voyage.''<
