(MENAFNEditorial) The UAE Board on Books for Young People has concluded a 3-day workshop on storytelling telling through dramatic expression during its participation in the Sharjah Children's Reading Festival.
During the workshop, attendees explored various forms of expressionism that are vital for storytellers and for interacting with the little ones. The workshop started out with a theoretical background on the origins of storytelling and its traditional tools. The evolutions of storytelling methods as well as the use of movement, body language, imagery, props and voice techniques were also discussed.
According to Dr Dalal Makari-Pausch, shadow teacher and psychodrama professional, the workshop is educational, entertaining and theatrical. It targets teachers, therapists, librarians and theatre experts and aims to teach them how to develop their abilities to present books to children and to encourage them to read in a creative way. "They all have potential and energy that they are not able to tap into. They need to find it to be able to use it," she said speaking about the attendees.
Makari-Pausch's experience ranges from working with Syrian refugees in Lebanon to working with juvenile delinquents in Algeria to psychotherapeutic and psychodrama practice and teaching in Germany.
"My aim is never to come up with a theory of how this works. I always use various tools in every context to find a method that best helps my audience express themselves," she said. "I'm always learning from my audience as much as I'm teaching them." In this workshop, she uses dramatic play and psychodrama with psychological, physical and behavioral exercises.
Commenting on the workshop's attendees, Makari-Pausch said that they surprised her with their eagerness to learn. "That made my job so much easier as it opened up doors of communication between us!"
At the end of the workshop, she hopes that the attendees will be able to present a story from the UAE heritage using the techniques that they were taught.
