(MENAFNEditorial) Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has signed two MoUs with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Korean Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMU), during the second day of the 16th Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2014) and Green Week.
"In line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to strengthen Dubai's leading business position in the region, DEWA is seeking to explore strategic partnerships with government agencies and private business sectors. DEWA signed two Memorandums of Understanding with the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and the Korean Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMU). These are part of DEWA's efforts to strengthen economic ties between the UAE and Korea in different aspects of the energy sector," said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, and MD & CEO of DEWA, at the signings.
DEWA signed the agreement with KEPCO represented by Woohyun Hwang, Vice President of the SG & ESS Department of KEPCO, to exchange information on Smart Grids, Smart Cities, Demand Side Management, Asset Management, Distribution Automation, Substation Automation, Advanced Metering Infrastructures, Telecommunications, System Integration, IT Infrastructures, Renewable Energy, Electric Vehicles, Micro Grids, Databases in the Energy Sector, Investment and participating opportunities and Performance Benchmarking.
DEWA is also contributing to the construction of Dubai's smart city through new initiatives to achieve sustainable development by encouraging houses and building owners to install Photovoltaic (PV) panels to produce electricity from solar energy and to adopt smart applications to speed up service delivery as well as smart and rational consumption by installing smart meters. This will contribute to providing happiness to the citizens and residents and sustain natural resources. DEWA also plans to set up electric vehicle charging stations and their infrastructure. Their locations will be determined in coordination with the relevant authorities to enable Dubai to occupy first place globally and enhance its role in sustainable energy.
"We are delighted to be working with KEPCO. This agreement will be fruitful for both parties in terms of exchanging expertise and adopting the latest trends for smart cities around the world that are implemented in Dubai," said Al Tayer.
"KEPCO successfully completed the Smart Grid Test Bed Project on Jeju Island, Korea last year and is preparing for a nationwide deployment of the Smart Grid beginning in 2015. If DEWA applies KEPCO's verified technology in developing the Dubai Smart City, DEWA will be able to save time and reduce project risks. On behalf of KEPCO, I am pleased to have signed an MOU with DEWA, and I look forward to closer cooperation on the Smart Grid in identifying optimal technologies and opportunities for addressing global climate change in ways like energy conservation and carbon emissions reduction," said Hwang.
This was followed by another MoU between DEWA and the Korean Association of Machinery Industry (KOAMU) represented by Park Young-Tahk, Executive Vice-Chairman of KOAMU, to support the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, develop business relations in common areas, support and participate in exhibitions of mutual interest and exchange knowledge and experience.
This agreement will go a long way in further strengthening bilateral ties between DEWA and KOAMU on energy, water, environment and machinery. Also, it covers participation at exhibitions organised by each party respectively, including WETEX and the Korean Machinery Fair and the International Fair for Plant Operating Systems.
"We are proud to contribute to promoting trade relations in the energy sector with the UAE and Dubai in particular. We congratulate Dubai on launching the first Green Week, and we expect that this event will bring more success in spreading a conservation culture in Dubai," said Young-Tahk.
KOAMU was established in 1968. It specialises in facilitating exchange of knowledge between the government and the business sectors through formal and informal institutions. The association works on implementing the government's industrial policy, such as quality assurance to ensure that local machinery has access to the necessary information and supports the work of the Korean government.
Other agreements are scheduled to take place during Green Week, which concludes on 20 April, with leading companies working in energy, water and environment.
