(MENAFN Press) As the Holy month of Ramadan see an excess use of dry frits especially in Iftar times, Dubai Municipality has intensified examination of dry fruit items, to check and control possible health and safety risks, DM officials said.

Food and Environment Laboratory at Dubai Central Laboratory is doing frequent examinations of food items that contain dry fruits to check whether they are meeting the specifications and requirements.

According to officials of the Laboratory there are possibilities of contamination while processing, transportation and in storage times of dry fruits.

Microbiological Analysis Division at the laboratory carries out both physical and sensory examinations in terms of colour, taste and external appearance of the fruits to make sure that they are free of yeast, fungi and Coliform Bacteria.

On the other hand, Chemical Analysis Division conducts test to find out Sulphur Dioxide used as preservatives in dry fruits such as figs ,apricot and the like.
