(MENAFN) Jordan government set up a tender for a crude oil and products terminal at its Red Sea port of Aqaba, Reuters reported.

An official at the Ministry of Energy said that the government invited international contractors to respond to a prequalification request by June 21.

A series of sabotages to the pipeline that carries natural gas from Egypt to Jordan have prompted the energy needy-country to seek additional supplies of gasoil, a more expensive fuel that can also be used to generate electricity.

Large imports of gasoil have put pressure on Jordan's only oil jetty that can accommodate tankers of around 400,000 tones.

Jordan's consumes over 150,000 barrels of crude oil per day, mostly from Saudi Arabia, and a heavy USD4 billion oil bill has put more pressure on the fiscal-deficit-troubled country.

Jordan is also mulling a tender to build an offshore liquefied natural gas terminal in the port of Aqaba by June.
