(MENAFN - Arab News) Prince Faisal bin Abdullah, president of the Saudi Red Crescent Authority, has highlighted the important role of the international Red Cross and Red Crescent movements in providing assistance to victims of armed conflicts and natural calamities around the world.
In a statement on the occasion of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, which was marked across the Kingdom with a variety of educational programs on Tuesday, Prince Faisal emphasized the movement's humanitarian endeavors to help people in trouble.
"In the beginning, the movement tackled the problems being faced by common people as a result of conflicts. It has signed agreements to take care of the injured and patients and war victims," the prince said, and urged all countries to respect those accords.
"The World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, which falls on May 8 every year, is an occasion to remember the great contributions of this movement that provides the largest network for humanitarian services in the world," the Red Crescent chief said.
He commended the volunteers of Red Cross and Red Crescent who work in the most difficult and dangerous situations. "Together for the Sake of Humanity" was the theme of this year's world day, which Prince Faisal said reflected the importance of joint efforts to alleviate the suffering of victims of wars and calamities.
