Elaraby Discuss Support of Palestinian Rights with Australian FM


(MENAFN- QNA) Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Nabil Elaraby discussed with Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop on the sidelines of the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

An Arab League statement said today that the meeting dealt with the Middle East peace process, the latest developments of the Palestinian problem and the Arab position in this regard.

During the meeting the Arab League Secretary-General asked the Australian minister to understand any position taken by the Arab states to end the occupation, pointing out that statements by some Australian officials ignore the legitimate Arab rights in Palestine. He also called for the reconsideration of voting pattern on the Arab draft resolutions in the United Nations to be more balanced.

Australia will assume the presidency of the Security Council for the month of November and its non-permanent membership of the Council will end in December.

For her part, the Australian Foreign Minister confirmed that her country supports the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations and seeks to reach a comprehensive and lasting solution to end the Arab-Israeli conflict. She added that her country offers practical solutions referring in this respect to the USD 15 million humanitarian assistance to Gaza as part of its commitment to provide development assistance to the Palestinian people estimated at about USD 56.5 million during the years 2014-2015.

They also reviewed the latest developments of the Syrian crisis and the importance of supporting the efforts of the new UN envoy Staffan de Mistura.

The Arab League Secretary General meanwhile briefed the Australian Foreign Minister on Arab League's recent resolution on the fight against terrorism. The Australian minister said here government will send a number of aircraft from the Australian air force to join the international coalition that aims to confront the Islamic State (Daash).
