the Manama Municipal Council has refused to renew the contracts of six businesses at Al Fateh Corniche as part of its BD500,00 plan to remodel the seashore - from the Eastern Corniche near Al Fateh Mosque to Marina Club, writes Naila Barakat. The decision is in line with the new regulations of the council, stopping renewing contracts of restaurants, coffee shops and entertainment outlets for children, council secretary Jassim Redha said. "The council is studying renovation plans for the corniche. We have stopped renewing contracts because we want to remove all the facilities so that we can remodel the corniche," he said. "The corniche will have a new look with a large number of palm trees, fountains and a 200-metre walkway. Alongside the corniche, the two most famous gardens in Manama - the Water Garden and Al Andalus Garden - will also be remodelled. The total expenditure on the three projects is expected to reach BD500,000." He said: "There are 16 businesses operating at the corniche. We will allow only those businesses whose contracts expire this year. After that, we will stop issuing permits and renewing contract. We will also remove all the barriers between the seashore and the land. We want people to enjoy being at a new-look corniche by the seashore," he said.
