AMMAN (Petra) � The Jordan Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has embarked on a plan to determine the Kingdom's actual needs of electricity between 2005 and 2020. JERC Director Rashad Abu Ras said the study, estimated at $500,000, is scheduled to end by mid-December after which work will start on the plan's implementation. Abu Ras noted that the electric power load had increased by nine per cent to 1,170 megawatts between January and August this year, compared to 1,570 megawatts in 2004. This was because of the increase in demand for electric power to run air conditions and a rise in power consumption for domestic and industrial purposes.
