DOHA: The Qatar Joint Committee for the Relief has launched a fund-raising campaign to support tsunami victims all over Asia.

The committee is supported by major charitable organisations like the Qatar Red Crescent, Qatar Charitable Society and the Sheikh Eid bin Mohammed Al Thani Charity Association.

In an "urgent humanitarian appeal" issued through the local media yesterday, the committee urged all people in Qatar to generously contribute to the drive. "Your donation could help relieve the suffering of millions affected by the earthquake in Asia," reads the appeal.

Those who wish to donate may send their contributions to the committee or the following banks- Qatar Islamic Bank (Account No: 1027816), Qatar International Islamic Bank (Account No: 007771), Qatar National Bank (Account No: 386999).

Meanwhile, Qatar Red Crescent will send the first consignment of relief materials to Indonesia today, a QRC official told The Peninsula yesterday. Qatar Airways has offered to operate two special flights to carry the aid, he added.

"We are providing logistical support to all voluntary groups collecting relief materials for tsunami victims," the official said. A team from QRC is also leaving for Indonesia today to join relief efforts there, he added.

A senior official from the Indonesian embassy said yesterday that about 4.5 tonnes of materials including clothing and food items were collected so far through the ongoing campaign launched by the mission with the support of Permiqa, the Indonesian community organisation.

"The response has been overwhelming. Apart from Indonesians, people from various other communities have also come forward to contribute," he said.
