DOHA: Jordan has become the first country to launch Al Jazeera mobile service with two local telecom operators.
Fastlink was the first operator in the Jordanian market to take up Al Jazeera Mobile short messaging system (SMS) service, allowing customers the flexibility of a pay-per-SMS type subscription.
Followed closely behind was the launch with the state-run MobileCom, which not only presented its customers with a pay-per-SMS option, but also provided the alternative of a fixed monthly rate for each service.
According to an Al Jazeera Mobile newsletter, a copy of which was forwarded to The Peninsula yesterday, Al Jazeera Mobile will soon be going global over the summer, providing customers a new way to subscribe through pre-paid scratch cards.
During Qatar Telecom's initiative to attract new subscribers to its GSM services in March this year, Al Jazeera Mobile was included as part of the package put together. This included, among other things, free subscription for three months to Al Jazeera Moible's Breaking News service, no-connection deposit, no advance payment or guarantor, three months' free line rental and other wireless services.
The newsletter said that Al Jazeera Mobile is busy developing and delivering new services to csutomers in other countries as well.
Al Jazeera Mobile has plans to work with operators in Palestine, Yemen and Mauritania. In Qatar, new services launched include business and financial news, sports alert and motor racing, the periodical said.
