MUSCAT — His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said has issued directives to implement several development projects worth RO15.2 million in the wilayats of the Batinah region.

This was stated by Ahmed bin Abdulnabi Macki, minister of national economy and deputy chairman of the Financial Affairs and Energy Resources Council.

Macki said in a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) that this royal grant came after the initial results of the population census 2003 which has shown population density in the Batinah region and due to the economic and strategic importance of the region.

He noted that the projects would cover service, educational, infrastructure, housing, health, electricity and water sectors.

He added that the allocations for these projects will be an addition to the amount endorsed in the sixth five-year plan (2001-2005). He said by the end of the first quarter of this year, the amount allotted for the region will be RO480 million. Government authorities concerned were informed to embark on the implementation of these projects, he said.

Macki said thanks to the surge in oil prices, the government implemented a number of road, health, educational and social projects during the sixth five-year plan at a total cost of RO743.1 million, noting that the original allocation for this plan was RO1,690.8 million and that the total amount allotted for the plan is RO2,433.9 million. He said this amount excludes the sum of the royal grant.

The minister said the wise policy and distinct approach of the Omani government in planning the five-year plans gained the Sultanate the respect and confidence of international, financial, investment, economic and industrial institutions which are keen to be strategic partners in the projects implemented by the government.

He noted that among the projects which attracted international companies and institutions are Sohar Port, the poly propylene, the petrochemicals the aluminium smelter, the fertilisers factory and power and desalination plants. Macki stressed the important role of the private sector in contributing along with the government to the development progress in the country. — ONA
