(MENAFN Press) Aqaba Thermal Power Station a successful Jordanian model for clean development mechanism projects
Amman, November 2009 – The Central Electricity Generation Company (CEGCO) participated in the International Conference and Exhibition on Green Energy & Sustainability for Arid Regions and Mediterranean Countries (ICEGES), which was held in the Royal Hotel in Amman between the 10th and 12th of November 2009, under the patronage of H.E. the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Eng. Khaldun Qteishat, and was organized by the Hashemite University.
The conference witnessed wide participation by experts, authority figures and researchers in the field of renewable energy, in addition to local and international institutions concerned with environmental and energy issues. The conference was organized to correspond with the directions of His Majesty King Abdullah II in dedicating efforts towards finding and effectively utilizing alternative sources of energy in the Kingdom, particularly in light of the growing international interest in green energy and the need for countries to focus on green and clean energy.
CEGCO’s participation involved the attendance of Eng. Abdel Fattah Nsour, CEGCO’s CEO, in addition to CEGCO’s Executive Manager of Project Development, Eng. Omar Al Daour, who discussed registering the Aqaba Thermal Power Station as a clean development mechanism (CDM) project and touched upon the features that the project will have, whereby he clarified the extent of the CO2 emission reduction necessary to switch the Aqaba Thermal Power Station into using natural gas. Al Daour also highlighted the yearly returns that resulted from the registration of this project, which is the only CDM project of its kind in Jordan and which is expected to yield considerable returns to the country’s treasury.
CEGCO also participated in the exhibition that was held alongside the Conference, whereby it displayed replacement parts that were produced or renovated for the use of various electricity generation units in the main workshops of the Al Hussein Thermal Station.
Commenting on this participation, Eng. Abdel Fattah Nsour said: “It brings us great pleasure to attend this conference, which features objectives that coincide with the reality of the energy sector at the local and international levels, and strives through its programs to consolidate energy experts’ efforts to achieve real results and sound plans based on scientific and modern foundations that can be implemented realistically.”
He added: “This important event has brought together top specialists in the field of renewable energy, and it offers the opportunity to discuss the latest developments and build upon our successes. We take great pride in our participation, which reflects CEGCO’s dedication to contributing to investment in green energy in order to yield positive results that will affect the future of the energy sector and the environment, hence the national economy and the Jordanian people.”
It is worth noting that the Hashemite University awarded CEGCO a shield and a certificate of appreciation for its valuable contributions during the Conference’s final meeting.
