(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))  Algerian state-run electricity and gas Company (SONELGAZ) said on Sunday that construction of the first-of-a-kind 100-million-dollar solar cell panels factory has began, with an annual capacity of 50 megawatts, and will be operational by 2012.

The announcement was made during the signing ceremony of an agreement of the project's manager, "Rouiba Eclairage," a public company specialized in public lighting equipments, in the presence of Algerian Energy and Mining Minister Chakib Khelil and Sonelgaz CEO Noureddine Bouterfa.

Bouterfa said in a press release that such project aims at producing a third of the country's electricity using renewable energy by the year 2050.
