(MENAFN) Yemen's President, Ali Abdullah Saleh, inaugurated the first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to South Korea from Yemen's newly built LNG plant in Balhaf on the Gulf of Aden, AFP reported.
Ali Abdullah Saleh gave the order to start pumping LNG from the terminal to a vessel anchored offshore.
Production Manager at the plant, Philippe Hennebelle, said that the South Korean LNG ship Ecopia will carry 147,000 cubic meters, adding that six shipments are expected to leave before the end of this year.
Hennebelle noted that this plant, which is worth $4.5 billion, involves a 320-kilometer gas pipeline from Maarib in eastern Yemen, making it the country's largest ever investment. The plant plans to reach a total output capacity of 6.7 million tons of LNG per year, exporting to South Korea, Europe and North America.
It is worth mentioning that France's Total as the main shareholder in the plant with a 39.6 percent stake.
