(MENAFN - Jordan Times) His Majesty King Abdullah on Tuesday underlined the importance of building communication bridges between Arab states and Latin American countries and especially with the Arab businessmen there to expand joint commercial relations.
During a meeting with a delegation of Chilean businessmen currently visiting the Kingdom, the King highlighted business prospects that the Chilean private sector can benefit from in order to increase the volume of joint investment.
King Abdullah pointed to investment opportunities available in the fields of tourism, construction, information technology, defence industries, agriculture, and energy and mining.
Jordan and Chile are members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and both states have signed free trade agreements (FTA) with the US. Thus, the two countries can benefit further from the WTO membership and the FTA agreements by boosting cooperation between them.
King Abdullah also highlighted programmes and plans that the Kingdom is working on to achieve sustainable development and strengthen the economy, underlining the importance of enhancing partnerships with other countries' private sectors to materialise these goals.
Jordan is currently working to implement megaprojects in the areas of water, energy and transport, the King told the delegation which grouped representatives of the Chile-Arab Business Council.
Commending the Kingdom's favourable investment environment, the delegates, chaired by Chilean businessman Jose Said, expressed their desire to boost economic cooperation with Jordan.
During the King's visit to Chile last year, the governments of Jordan and Chile signed memoranda of understanding to cement ties between them in the fields of tourism and investment promotion. They also signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of public works and housing.
Several Jordanian companies also signed agreements with their Chilean counterparts during the visit.
Also yesterday, Industry and Trade Minister Amer Hadidi and Jordan Investment Board Chief Executive Officer Maen Nsour met with the visiting delegation and briefed them on the Kingdom's economic drive.
Stressing the need for more economic and commercial cooperation, Hadidi noted that the Jordanian Chilean commercial exchange volume is below the desired level.
