(MENAFN - Times of Oman) MUSCAT — An agreement worth $1,400 million to prepare engineering designs for asphalt production plant at the Sohar Refinery Complex, was signed yesterday at the Ministry of Oil and Gas with Indian Engineers Co. Ltd.
The agreement was signed by Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Yahya Al Hadabi, acting chief executive officer (CEO) of Sohar Refinery on behalf of the company, while R. C. Varma, general manager (marketing) of the company signed on behalf of the Indian Engineers Co. Ltd.
Present at the signing ceremony were Nassir bin Khamis Al Jashmi, Ministry of Oil and Gas undersecretary and Dr A'adil bin Khamis Al Kindi, CEO of Oman Oil Refinery Company.
Following the signing ceremony, Al Jashmi said that the agreement, concerned with the setting up of asphalt project in the Sohar Refinery Complex, comes in response to the increasing demand for asphalt in the Sultanate.
The project gains more significance since the Sultanate has allocated considerable amount of money during the previous and future five-year plans to construct several roads that serve different sectors of the Omani economy.
Al Jashmi said the project's total cost is RO80 million and the completion of engineering works, financing, construction and installation will take 24 months.
The factory will commence commercial production of super asphalt to meet the Sultanate's needs in the first quarter of 2010, he added.
