(MENAFN) Cargo throughput at the Dubai Cargo Village (DCV) grew by 14.77 percent during the first eight months of the year, reaching 968,863.80 tonnes, compared to 843,312.33 tonnes during the same period last year, Gulf Daily News reported.
In August, the DCV handled 124,034.37 tonnes compared to 112,649.10 tonnes in August 2005, an increase of 10.11 percent.
Imports and exports increased by 10.02 per cent to 121,025.72 tonnes in August from 110,007.22 tonnes in August 2005.
Transshipments rose by 14.79 per cent to 67,232.58 tonnes in August from 58,567.55 tonnes in August 2005.
The figures show the volume of courier and mail increased 13.88 per cent to 3,008.65 tonnes in August from 2,641.88 tonnes in August 2005.
In 1997, the terminal handled more than 400,000 tonnes. By last year, the terminal crossed 1 million annual tonnes of air cargo — its entire handling capacity.
The DCV is projected to handle two million tonnes by 2014 and 2.7 million tonnes by 2018.
To cope with demand for cargo space, the DCA has embarked upon a major cargo expansion program that includes the construction of the Cargo Mega Terminal.
