(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The Dubai Police have arrested a government official for facilitating the smuggling of drugs into the General Department of Corrective and Punitive Establishment.

Major-General Abdul Jalil Mehdi, Director of the General Department of Anti-Narcotics at the Dubai Police, said the anti-narcotic section in collaboration with the Dubai Central Jail, managed to foil an attempt of smuggling drugs, on April 30, to two inmates already charged with taking drugs. He added that one of the suspects involved in the smuggling is an employee of a Dubai government department.

Major-General Mehdi said the police received information that an Asian living in Al Quoz was smuggling drugs to two inmates at the temporary prison at the Dubai Central jail.

The police raided his flat and the suspect was taken to the anti-drug department where he confessed that he received hashish and narcotic pills from two others, who met him in Al Quoz. He agreed that he intended to supply the drugs to the two inmates. The anti-drug team then set a trap to arrest the two suspects who would deliver the drugs to the Asian suspect. Major-General Mehdi said the second and third suspects reached the area about 1am in a car.

The second suspect, 37-year-old BF who works in a Dubai government department and who is a UAE national, threw a plastic bag containing the drug out of the car and drove away at high speed.

The officials chased the suspects' cars and arrested them when the cars stopped at a traffic signal in Al Mutaina area. The police then took them to the place where they threw the drugs. There, they confessed that they threw the drugs so that the third suspect would pick it up and give it to the two inmates, the UAE national AA and the AGCC national, AB.

The police said they found three plastic bags containing drug pills and one piece of hashish. The first suspect was charged with promoting drugs, the second and third suspects with drug possession and promotion of drugs and the fourth and fifth suspects with promoting drugs in jail.

Major-General Mehdi appreciated the people who had informed the police about the drugs and added that as per Article 43, the drug user will be exempt from penalty if he approaches the police on his own.
