Jordan- Islamists pan 'disappointing' draft elections law 

(MENAFN - Jordan Times) The Muslim Brotherhood and its political arm, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), on Monday expressed rejection of the "disappointing and un-democratic" draft elections law.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Islamist movement described the legislation as "merely a different version of the one-person, one-vote system" that will lead to more tension and escalation on the street.

"The draft law in its miserable and depressing shape shows that the state is still governed by the same hesitant mentality that is haunted by the fears and worries of the political powers and thus issued a law that can control the outcome of elections and the makeup of the next Lower House," the movement said in the statement, a copy of which was sent to The Jordan Times.

In addition, the Muslim Brotherhood alleged that the "discouraging" legislation is a sign of the absence of serious political will to achieve reforms on the part of state, which they said issues "backwards laws" that do not suit the post-Arab Spring Jordanians and ignore the "psychological and intellectual changes that took place in the Arab region".

Expressing their complete rejection of the elections draft law, the Islamists called on all the political and social powers in the country to also reject the "anti-democratic" legislation that does not meet the "aspirations and ambitions of the public".

In the statement, the movement also called on the authorities to withdraw the draft law and come up with more promising legislation that can effectively boost the reform process and avoid escalation.
