(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) A police corporal was sentenced to five years in prison on Sunday by the Court of First Instance for kidnapping and assaulting his ex-girlfriend.
The Court of First Instance, presided by Judge Maher Salama Al Mahdi, found the 26-year-old Emirati corporal guilty of kidnapping and physically assaulting the compatriot woman in December last year.
The court ordered him to pay Dh21,000 in temporary compensation and referred the civil case to the relevant civil court. The verdict is subject to appeal within 15 days at the Court of Appeal.
The woman, 23, told the prosecutor that she had known the defendant since she was 13. She said that his behaviour became aggressive towards her and that was why she had to break up with him shortly before the incident.
On December 12, last year, he kidnapped her from outside her office in Port Saeed in Muraqqabat in her own car. The woman alleged during the investigation that the defendant was angry since she turned down his proposal to marry her. Based on her statement, the prosecutor termed the kidnap as an act of revenge and requested that the harshest penalty be inflicted on him.
On the journey he tore her abaya and head cover, bit her hand, locked the door and drove speedily and recklessly until the car broke down. As she tried to walk out of the car he slapped her on her face and bit her hand. The defendant then forced her into a taxi and told the driver to take them to Ajman.
But the driver responded to her cry for police help and stopped in front of a traffic policeman. The accused earlier pleaded not guilty.
