(MENAFN - Jordan Times) The Criminal Court has sentenced a 25-year-old man to 15 years in prison after convicting him of killing a man in September 2007.
The court found the defendant guilty of shooting a bystander to death while chasing a bus in an Amman neighbourhood and handed him the maximum punishment.
The court also ordered the defendant to pay JD21,865 in compensation to the victim's family.
Court papers said the defendant had gone out with his three brothers to look for a group of people who had beaten up their father.
The four brothers stood in the middle of a street in their neighbourhood, stopping vehicles and checking their passengers in an attempt to find the attackers, the court added.
"The defendant attempted to stop a bus but the driver refused, so he fired at the vehicle and a bullet struck a man who was sitting in front of a shop nearby, killing him instantly," the 14-page verdict stated.
The tribunal comprised judges Awad Abu Jarad, Mohammad Khatib and Zeid Sanousi.
The Cassation Court will review the verdict, which was issued on March 24.
