(MENAFN - Qatar News Agency) Lusail City Real Estate Development Company (LREDC) on Wednesday entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) to implement a set of minimum measurable performances for buildings on the iconic Lusail City development.
The agreement between the two organisations takes LREDC's commitment to sustainable built-environment to the next level of realisation, and emphasises the company's efforts to promote responsible development as well as operation techniques that protect Qatar's natural environment and community health.
"LREDC was one of the first organisations in Qatar to adopt GORD's Qatar Sustainability Assessment System (QSAS). Today's MoU is a testament of our continued support of sustainable and environmentally conscious initiatives in Qatar," said LREDC chief executive officer, Eng. Essa Mohammed Ali Kaldari.
"As the developers of Qatar's largest Greenfield real estate project, Lusail City, we have a wonderful opportunity to serve as a national role model in sustainable development while we strive to fulfil Qatar's National Vision 2030," added Eng. Kaldari.
As part of the MoU, GORD will serve as a service provider to LREDC in offering monitoring and consultancy services to LREDC in regards to QSAS implementation for buildings being built in Lusail City. This ranges from GORD's assistance in QSAS-centric preparation of concept designs, their reviews, and support during and post-construction.
An award-winning product, GORD's QSAS has been derived from over 40 national and international rating methods such as LEED, BREEAM and others, and stands out with its particular focus on region's social, economic, environmental and cultural conditions such as power consumption and scarcity of water.
QSAS's sustainable design guidelines cover a range of factors for considering full certification, including effects on traffic congestion and pollution, land use, harmful emissions, electricity & water consumption and its associated burden on municipal supply and treatment systems. Material use and disposal, indoor building air quality, cultural conservation and support of the national economy, and other issues related to building management and operation are also taken into account.
A future home to more than 200,000 residents, Lusail City will draw 170,000 people for work in the city's various precincts and welcome 80,000 visitors to its entertainment and recreation facilities.
Lusail City's 19 districts will encompass not only new residential, commercial, hospitality, and retail opportunities, but a full array of community needs, complete with schools, medical facilities, sport, entertainment and shopping centres. The 38-square-kilometre city of the future boasts a Light Rail network, a water taxi system, and marina bridges.
For his part, Yousef Al Horr, founder and chairman of Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD), has said that since the implementation of its Qatar Sustainability Assessment System (QSAS), more projects have adopted sustainability.
Commenting on the success of the QSAS, a green building code developed in Qatar, Al Horr said effective regulation was needed for more respect for the environment in urban design. "Since we started implementing the QSAS in Qatar, more and more projects have adopted sustainability," he said.
