(MENAFN - The Peninsula) Qatar Charity is preparing to implement a QR13m reconstruction project for schools in the Gaza Strip in cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council's (GCC) Gaza Reconstruction Programme.

GCC contributed QR9m and Qatar Charity contributed more than QR3.5m. Qatar Charity in Palestine and GCC's Gaza Reconstruction Programme recently signed a memorandum of understanding attended by all parties concerned.

As part of the project, Qatar Charity will build 130 classrooms in more than 12 schools across the Gaza Strip to develop and expand the capacity of those schools.

The project will improve the educational environment and enhance the level of educational services in Palestine. It will also reduce classroom over-crowding in targeted schools as some classrooms previously contained up to 43 students.

This project is the outcome of the successful cooperation between Qatar Charity and the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) in its capacity as the managing body of GCC's Gaza Reconstruction Programme.

Ramadan Aasi, Country Director of Qatar Charity in Palestine, has stressed the importance for maintaining cooperation between Qatar Charity and the IDB in reconstruction projects in the Gaza Strip which continues to suffer from siege.

Reconstruction is desperately needed by those affected by the war in order to improve their living conditions.

Aasi also expressed his deep appreciation of the generous contribution of the GCC's Gaza Reconstruction Programme. The project will provide invaluable support in the various sectors including education, health, social services and economic development.

This project underlines Qatar Charity's deeply held belief that the provision of education is a very important means of empowering societies.

Meanwhile, Qatar Charity in cooperation with the IDB is currently implementing a number of educational projects in the Gaza Strip as part of Gaza Reconstruction Programme with a budget of QR11m.

Those projects include: reforming and reconstructing 18 schools, importing equipment for scientific laboratories in colleges of science and engineering and establishing training centres for teachers. This is in addition to the reconstruction of 29 schools in the Gaza Strip which was completed last year at a cost of QR3.65m.
