(MENAFN) US firm Leedco Engineers announced that it has been granted a 50 million pact for construction of an international airport in Salahuddine Province in northern Iraq, Reuters reported.
The head of the province's investment commission, Jewher Al-Fahel, said that this airport is going to be built as an alternative to Baghdad International Airport. The land of the project is expected to be handed over to the US engineering consulting services company in the coming few days, Al-Fahel said.
Leedco's representative in Iraq, Hassan Badrelddine, pointed out that the contract was worth 50 million and the goal is to have the new airport operational within two years, with initial capacity of 2 million passengers a year. It is worth noting that Baghdad International Airport handles nearly 7 million passengers a year.
Earlier this month, the Transport Ministry said that it will invite foreign firms in April in order to build an international airport in southern Iraq.
