BRIEF: Simpson at home in Wells Fargo lead
May 05, 2012 (Menafn - The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Quail Hollow Club member Webb Simpson is making himself at home this week.
Simpson, who lives less than a mile from the club, birdied the 17th hole Saturday afternoon to grab a one-stroke lead over Ryan Moore and D.A. Points heading into Sunday's final round of the Wells Fargo Championship. He is at 14-under par 202 through 54 holes.
Moving into contention Saturday was 2010 champion Rory McIlroy, whose 66 moved him into a tie for fourth with second-round leader Nick Watney, two shots behind Simpson.
Rickie Fowler and Stewart Cink will start the final round three strokes off the lead.
At in the afternoon, five players shared the lead before Simpson gained a bit of separation with birdies at Nos. 15 and 17. He is seeking his third PGA tour victory, which would go a long way toward securing Simpson a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team this fall.
