LG to Invest in OLED, Domestic Display Makers in Dilemma
BEIJING, Aug 24, 2011 (Menafn - SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) --The Korean-based display maker LG Display Co Ltd. LPL expressed to invest USD 2.83 billion in the mass production of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) panel of the next generation, leading its Chinese counterparts into dilemma.
According to planning, LG plans to realize the mass production of OLED by the second half of 2014. Before then, the company will produce a few OLED panels for TV starting from 2012 and will apply them to 55-inch TV products produced by LG Electronics.
However, domestic display makers are in a dilemma as for whether to invest in OLED. On one hand, the huge investment in LCD panels can not be paid back within a very short time; on the other hand, the technological innovation has drawn near. If domestic enterprises are to enter into the OLED industry, they have to make huge investments in the sector before their LCD panel business can profit. If not, Chinese display firms will be far lagged behind once OLED becomes mainstream display technology.
