On a rain-swept track in Miami, Canadian team AIM Autosport FXDD anddrivers Emil Assentato and Jeff Segal won their very first victorywith the team's new Ferrari 458 Italia Grand AM yesterday (April 29)taking an early-season lead in the Grand AM Rolex Sports Car SeriesGT Team and Driver Championship Standings.
AIM Autosport is the only Canadian-owned company competing full-timein the Rolex Series. The victory for the team is the second in threeyears at Homestead Miami Speedway for Segal and Assentato and is thefirst for the Grand AM in the team's third race this season.
Winning driver, Jeff Segal talked about his team's big win.
"The race was really, really difficult," said Segal. "We kind of sawin practice this morning that it was going to be interesting but thecar was as good as it could be and really our job was just to keepthe car on the track... protect the car. We did that. We weren't offthe track - not even one time. I just watched as cars flew off theroad in front of me, hit each other, had a couple of good races...fortunately, the timing worked out that we made one pretty criticalpass right at the end right before the rain rolled in.
"Just really, really excited about the direction this program isheading. Obviously we have a lot of races left to go but I thinkeverybody is comfortable with the car. We're comfortable with eachother so we're hoping that this is the start of a good run thisseason."
Co-driver, Emil Assentato also spoke about the victory, crediting histeammate.
"It was a hell of a day for everybody," said Assentato. "Everyone hadtough conditions to fight and the driving out there was spectacular.Of course, I was thrilled to be in the 458 GT car. We had a very goodcar today... pretty much was a drivers' race, not a car race... Jeffdid a fantastic job when he took over the second seat there."
