Menards, Cheddar's want to build in O'Fallon
Mar 19, 2012 (Menafn - Belleville News-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --A chain of home improvement stores and a restaurant chain are both eyeing the metro-east as their first locations in the St. Louis market.
Menards, a hardware and home improvement chain or stores, and Cheddar's, a chain of casual cafe-style restaurants, both have applications before the O'Fallon City Planning and Zoning Commission to build within a proposed 29.7 million tax increment financing district located along Central Park Plaza Drive.
The proposed TIF, which is located along Central Park Drive between the intersections at Frank Scott Parkway and North Green Mount Road, is scheduled to be considered for final approval on May 7.
City planning and zoning director Ted Shekell said Menards wants to build a 162,000-square-foot store and 42,000-square-foot outdoor warehouse south of the vacant American Furniture and Electronics store. Cheddar's is looking to build on 2.6 acres located southeast of Gold's Gym.
"We are thrilled to have both of them chose O'Fallon," Shekell said. "We think they are going to make great businesses for us."
Menards is a family owned chain that has more than 260 stores in Illinois, Missouri and 11 other states. Shekell said the do-it-yourself chain generates an estimated 30 million to 35 million in retail sales per store.
Irving, Texas-based Cheddar's has more than 80 restaurants located in Illinois, Missouri and other states throughout the Midwest and South.
Shekell said that pending the planing and zoning commission and city council's approval, construction for both either project could begin as soon as this summer. The application for Menards is set to go before the planing and zoning commission on March 27, and Cheddar's application is scheduled to be heard by the commission on April 10.
